Black and white abstract contemporary painting by Houston, TX artist Tra' Slaughter. The painting features an excerpt written in black sans-serif letters all over the white canvas. This piece was included in Tra's solo show "Souls of Soles" at Reeves Art and Design Houston. Signed, titled, and dated by the artist at the back. Unframed but framing options are available. Artist Statement: Over the course of his life, Tra` has come to the realization that his art is not a private conversation; rather art is a communal experience. As a result, he aims to create powerful and persuasive art with a social function, that challenges our understanding of the world in which we live and how we operate within it. As an artist, he is a reflector, translator, and mediator of societal issues, including racial and gender inequality, civil rights, globalization, environmental crisis, greed, and cultural and social identity. Tra` creates works that act as windows, providing insight and focus on complex subjects, while offering my unique interpretations, and raising difficult questions. His most recent body of work can be described as an Expressive Assemblage consisting of found materials with symbolic potency reborn to tell their stories in mixed media paintings and assemblage sculptures. Every piece he creates has numerous interwoven layers of stories and experiences that can only be seen by returning and looking even deeper. When the viewer seeks to understand the story behind a piece of his work, they begin to remember a forgotten history and their part in that history. His hope and ultimate goal as an artist is to inspire viewers to open their eyes to what is really happening in our world, so they in turn can find the valor and compassion to be a voice for the oppressed, discarded, and forgotten. Artist Biography: Tra` aims to create powerful and persuasive art with a social function, that challenges our understanding of the world in which we live and how we operate within it. As an artist, he is a reflector, translator, and mediator of societal issues, including racial and gender inequality, civil rights, globalization, environmental crisis, greed, and cultural and social identity. Benaras, started flowing in his canvasses both through landscapes and human faces. Since 1995-96 his Benaras paintings started transforming. Initially his landscapes contained reflection of naturalness transformed through melancholic chiaroscuro. Gradually the naturalness started disintegrating into expressionistic structures. At a certain stage during 2004-05 some of these structures yielded into abstractions shedding all the links with naturalness. Then again the sign-symbols integrated into geometrical structures reflecting traces of original locations. About the Artist and his works : Born : Born in 1965. Tapas spent his childhood and early youth in the quiet idyllic environment of rural Bengal. The soothing lyrical landscape and the intrinsic mythical past within the rural life made a great impact in his inner being, which aroused in him love for beauty, spiritual in nature, making him contemplative and inward looking.
